Thread starter talldrink Start date May 17, This is a guide on how to convert your megatouch XL from cd-rom based image XL, XL, XL, Gold, XL Platinum to Hard drive based image XL double platinum, titanium titanium 2 I had to piece together a guide from various post on here, my own experiences and the merit service bulletins.

I'm going to make the assumption that you want to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive. Keyless Image there's a working keyless titanium image out there if you ask nicely.

How to convert: 1. Use the 5v lead off the power supply to power your adapter. I have tested a FAT 32 file system, but I couldn't boot it. There's a possibility to tweak the bios settings to get proper LBA support. Meaning that the software looked at the identification chip on the hard drive, and made sure it matched a certain block of numbers.

If not, the game would not boot. Maxx and later series did not have this as Merit gave in to pressure from operators. There have been several hacks that disabled this hard drive check. I'm sure one of our members or software gurus have or could develop this. Merit is out of business and no longer selling drives, so once the original drives fail, that's it until a hack comes along.

Could someone point me in the right direction if it is possible to do and how to do it. Read it could be done, read it couldn't because of special firmware on the drive. If the drive fails, could a cd drive running a CD version of the software work? Last edited: Nov 25, Stimpy89 said:.

Let's assume you find a way to kick the firmware check out yes, they exist , then you can just grab an IDE-to-USB-adapter and connect the drive to your HD. Merit at some point made the switch from DOS to Linux called "merit-linux" and if you connect the Linux drive to a Windows machine, there's the potential that Windows corrupts the boot sectors. DOS versions should be fine, but I've seen problems with those too at work but in other situations, I'm in server maintenance.

I suggest using a Linux machine either way, it's free and open source, so just install it on some old PC or laptop. It's far easier to backup the drive with Linux. What you need to do is a sector-by-sector backup, so every bit and byte is read one by one and copied into a file. You can use the tool "dd" under Linux for this. And you will find lots of information on this on the web, but here's the short version: 1.

That should take a while, and you will not be given any progress bar or something I wouldn't sugget doing that on a regular basis. Afaik the cd drive was just used for updates not the software itself. If you have an image of the software itself and the corresponding key, you can just use "dd" to put this image on a brand new IDE drive and replace the old IDE.

So if the FTP is back up, easiest solution would be: pull the image you need, use "dd" to write it on a blank IDE drive, put it in your machine, tadaa. Mahkeymike Active member. Orizzle said:. Some XL machines only ran off the CD. The point of that thread is to convert the CD to hard drive.

Last edited: Nov 26, My machine is definitely running off a very loud hard drive. Right now my plan is to use it until it dies.

Hopefully I get a long time out of it. I was just trying to come up with a backup plan. I did play a little with the sapphire 2 no check image that was on the ftp. I used a intel mb and it booted right up. There were a few errors but it kept going. My touchscreen is not working.

Just messing around and would love to see if I could get it working. I do apologize if I'm using the wrong terminology. I've been learning as much as I can in a short period of time. Any clues on how to fix this as I bought the machine used and don't have a key. Current collection - 28 cabs, 4 pins. The security key looks like this: It has to be present at all times for the system to boot!

Remove it from the holder and clean both metal contacts with rubbing alcohol, as well as the holder on the PCB. By boot, I mean fully load into the menu where games can be selected. Dirt, corrosion, nicotine buildup, etc Shipping something from the U. Please use USPS to avoid additional? PM me if you have any questions. Ok, so I have looked all over the cab, inside and out, and can not find the key inside the machine anywhere, let-a-lone where it would go.

It was transported to my parent's house completely together, so if the key fell out, it would be inside the cab somewhere. Not that I can see anyway. Here are some pics. Anyone wanna point out to me where the key is supposed to go? Beats the hell out of me. The game boots all the way to the screen that says "MAXX Here is what everything looks like No Key
