The 25 metre high obelisk of the Dover Patrol Memorial picture 16 stands on the cliff top in memory of those members of the Dover Patrol and the royal and merchant navies lost in the two world wars.

Beyond the memorial, the path begins to descend towards St. Margaret's Bay picture As I got a little nearer to the bay, I watched a Norfolk Line ferry appear from behind the cliffs and sail out into the English Channel towards France picture The path descends a set of steep concrete steps to the car park at St.

Margaret's Bay, then climbs the steep road and then along a track to get back to the cliff tops on the other side of the bay. The path continues to climb for a little while, heading briefly inland before skirting around the seaward side of the South Foreland Lighthouse picture The Saxon Shore Way continues to follow the clifftops and before long the outer walls of Dover Harbour begin to come into view picture 20 , with a regular stream of ferries and other boats arriving and leaving the harbour.

Even though the harbour was still more than two kilometres away, the noise of the machinery was already clearly audible. As the path continued along the top of the cliffs, more of the harbour gradually came into view. At several places along the way there are large pieces cut out of the cliffs, the largest of which is Langdon Hole picture 21 , where several horses were grazing on the grassy slopes next to the path.

A little further along the cliffs the path begins to pass above the Eastern Docks picture 22 and soon arrives at the National Trust's Langdon Cliffs Visitor Centre.

The path begins to descend beyond the Visitor Centre, with some good views over to Dover Castle picture 23 before the path heads down some concrete steps under the A20 and into the town below Castle Hill. Gorgeous scenery along the waters edge, with passing sailing boats and views out to sea. Would get muddy on a wet day. Hiking boots advisable whatever the weather. First half: HARD! Definitely not moderate. Second half: easy and flat. Maybe that's why it averages to an overall 'moderate' but keep an eye out if you haven't been excercising for a while, as the first half is very demanding.

There are tons of hills, but it does reward you with spectacular views. There is a diversion due to a landslide not long after the start, just as you climbed up the mountain.

I really enjoyed the walk however the second half of it was a very long flat walk on a field so it was a wee bit boring and there wasn't any shade from the sun so definitely bring a hat and sunscreen if you go in summer. I recommend what they said in their feedbacks as I found them very helpful. We walked to there and back from the Deal Food Festival which was enjoyable.

First issue is that due to the Golf Open a large section of the trail was inaccessible. Second issue is the costal part of the route became very samey and a bit painful under foot.

However we timed it with Deal Castle market which was nice. The start was gradual and definitely gets the heart pumping getting up to the cliffs etc. The tracks were okay but not the best markings midway, take extra care especially if it rains or has rained.

This was the case when I did it today so just a word of warning as you may find yourself in for a slight detour. A great challenging walk. Things to look out for - orchards - great views across the the river - fabulous views of the kingsferry bridge and even a chance to walk under it.

Nice walk with stunning views. The start is along a road but it then goes off road and is fairly easy to follow. A detour at the end can take you into Brockhill country park for a coffee. I really enjoyed this trail. Secondly one or two markings signs posts are hidden in the brambles and bushes so really keep an eye on the map. Overall loved the app! Unfortunately Appledore station is approx min walk from the end of the trail! I did. We didn't do the whole walk as we wanted to do around 3hrs.

The trail is very muddy so wellys are a good shout. We did take a different route back by going through a field, we had to walk along the road but over the other side of the barriers so it wasn't too bad. Great walk with a mixture of scenery.
